Bikes that claim to be the same size can actually be very different from brand to brand, and are even different when comparing bike lines within the same brand. Unfortunately, that makes it very easy to buy a bike that not only doesn't meet your needs, but is the wrong size altogether.
Using the traditional "t-shirt" sizing for bikes - Small, Medium, etc. - doesn't adequately explain a bike's real geometry. So instead of traditional bike sizing, at Tri Shop we use measurements called Stack and Reach. Using Stack and Reach allows us to compare bikes, frame to frame, and get a better understanding of how one bike relates to another.
For road bikes, we measure Frame Stack and Frame Reach. Frame Stack and Frame Reach measure the vertical and horizontal distances from the center of the bottom bracket to the headtube top.
For triathlon bikes, the relative size of a bike can be dramatically affected by the handlebar, extension, and integration features of the bike, making Frame Stack and Frame Reach less ideal for comparing triathlon bikes.
Instead, we measure Armpad Stack and Armpad Reach. Armpad Stack and Armpad Reach measure the vertical and horizontal distances from the bottom bracket to the edge of the armpad.
Stack and Reach allows us to compare bike geometries, but what Stack and Reach is ideal for you? Some shops will size you from a glance, while others will break out the tape measure. At the end, they'll magically have an option in stock they claim is perfect. At Tri Shop, we demand better accuracy and so should you.
Tri Shop's bike sizing process includes a biomechanical assessment and a detailed bike fit session on our Guru Dynamic Fit Unit or Retül Müve fit bikes. This process allows us to get dynamic body geometry measurements, compare positions quickly, get rider feedback, and ultimately determine your ideal position on the bike.
Once we've identified your ideal position, we digitally measure the fit bike to identify your fit coordinates, including your optimal stack and reach. Then it's time to take your fit coordinates and go bike shopping.
To help facilitate the shopping process, Tri Shop uses a proprietary software tool called Fit Finder. Fit Finder allows us to quickly compare your position against a database of bike geometries, including frame geometries for road bikes and armpad geometries for tri bikes. The Tri Shop Bike Fit Team has spent dozens of hours digitally measuring and cataloguing bike geometries, giving us one of the only "real world" geometry databases in the industry.Fit Finder is a game changer, providing Tri Shop with an unmatched set of tools to help you find the very best bike for your money.
Armed with your fit coordinates and your Fit Finder results, you can shop with confidence. An example Fit Finder report can be seen below:
If you're buying a bike from Tri Shop, this process is completely free. It's part of our commitment to make sure you're buying the best bike for your money.
If you go through our Fit First process but aren't quite ready to buy a bike at Tri Shop, we charge $199 for the fit and reports. That $199 will apply to the purchase of a bike at Tri Shop when you're ready to make that choice. If you choose to purchase elsewhere, we are happy to set up the purchased bike as best we can to the fit coordinates in your fit report.
There are no hidden fees or intent - we just want to make sure you're riding in the best position to meet your needs.
Whether your budget is $800 or $8000, it's still too much to pay to gamble and get the wrong bike. No matter what your budget happens to be, getting your new bike Fit First makes sure you are maximizing your investment with the highest value bike you can get for your budget.
No more "we can make it fit." No more guesswork. At Tri Shop, you get the precision to make sure you're on the right bike and it's set up in the right position. We guarantee it.
Test ride what? The Fit First process explicitly answers what you should consider test riding and makes sure that the test ride process allows you to compare bikes, not saddles and handlebars.
That said, if you're still skeptical about getting your bike Fit First or would prefer to test ride before getting fit, Tri Shop can accomodate. We can do a "quick fit" and from that data, identify options from our extensive inventory of road and triathlon bikes.
We have options ready to ride at a wide range of prices and configurations. If you decide to buy without going through the Fit First process, your bike purchase will still include a complimentary Pro Bike Fit to optimize your position and guarantee value whether you were Fit First or not.
No matter where you decide to buy, if you aren't getting fit coordinates from your bike sizing process or the shop isn't showing you the math that justifies why a bike is a good fit, you should run away. Every shop will claim to have the experience and expertise to find the right bike (which they will magically have in stock), but it's better to trust the numbers, not the salesman.
Simply put, if your shop isn't using the latest tools and latest understanding of proper bike sizing, your chances of buying the wrong bike are greatly increased.
